'Limited Size' Elephants

Article Abstract:

Steel industry executives are watching the Justice Department's antitrust policy affecting mergers. The Justice Department permitted the steel merger that made LTV Steel. Originally the merger between LTV Corporation and Republic Steel Corporation was rejected by the Department. The steel companies sold off two Republic plants that, according to the government, made the market share level acceptable for a merger. The Justice Department also acted to prevent price collusion by LTV Steel.

Customer Service Nears Center Stage

A company's customer service department has become more than a complaint handler. Customer service professional are handling all spheres of management. Customer service managers have formed an association, the International Customer Service Association (ICSA), to give themselves more visibility and clout. The role of customer service managers today is examined.

Bye-bye, Big Eight

Steel industry chief executive officers (CEOs) are trying to solve the industrys' problems by merging the bigger companies together. Despite lost jobs and closed plants, the CEOs think this is the right approach. Examples of successful mergers are presented.
