Sycamore feels heat as rivals tap customer

Article Abstract:

Sycamore Networks Inc.'s 2/3rds fall in current quarter revenue may be linked to optical-network competitors wooing Sycamore's main customer, Williams Communications Group. Ciena is especially aggressive as Sycamore awaits parts for its more powerful update of SN16000 optical switch. Corvis Corp. is selling long-distance transport equipment to Williams as well. Sycamore feels that product delays are not going to be a problem, but some industry analysts see a dissatisfaction with their products.

IBM finds method to make faster chips

Article Abstract:

International Business Machines Corp. has developed a way to increase chip speed 35%, while decreasing power consumption, by using a new form of silicon called strained silicon. Strained silicon is made by putting silicon on top of a similar compound with a different atomic structure, silicon-germanium, which makes the silicon atoms react by stretching to try to align themselves with the atoms in the compound.
