MCI WorldCom moves quickly on costs; layoffs could hit 3,750 as Ebbers slims down newly merged carrier

Article Abstract:

MCI WorldCom plans to lay off up to 3,750 employees as part of significant cost reductions following WorldCom's recent $37 billion acquisition of MCI. The telecommunications giant, fulfilling CEO Bernard J. Ebbers' pledge to make swift cutbacks, had announced that it sought to slash $2.5 billion in 1999 expenses. A central move consists of blending the MCI and WorldCom networks, which anonymous executives said will lower expenses in voice and data traffic transmissions. Insiders said the layoffs announcement, which would reduce 3% to 5% of the Jackson, MS-based company's staff, probably will begin as early as mid-Dec 1998. Other moves include efforts to lower general overhead costs by $900 million, such as instructing employees to seek the least expensive expenses available. MCI WorldCom has local-telephone access to 70% of US businesses operations.
