Maintain Control of Company Information

Article Abstract:

The growing use of computers in companies represents a great challenge to management. It can give management a very useful competitive tool. However, it can also pose a threat to management through loss of control over information. Management must recognize this and take steps to control the dissemination of information. An excellent approach to this problem is a computer auditor and committee. Detailed standards and procedures should be established. Computer access to confidential information should be limited through passwords and other devices. The introduction of computer technology into business represents a significant advance, but its use must be monitored and directed.

Classified information

Article Abstract:

The Department of Labor is strictly enforcing federal laws on wages as shown by its close scrutiny of payrolls of small businesses. These businesses face payment for damages and backpay from legal actions. These pertain to errors in employee classification based on job titles as either exempt or nonexempt. A thorough knowledge of DOL policies on white collar workers' exemptions, sick leave rules and others is beneficial in worker classification, wage calculations and deductions by employers to prevent legal actions against them.

A two-way street

Article Abstract:

Salary-deduction retirement programs offer a lot of advantages to companies. 401(k) programs are cost-effective in the sense that it is the employee who bears the cost of the program. The plan also serves to limit company liability by transferring investment decisions to employees and allows for flexible contribution systems that can be tied-in to company profitability. Arthur Urciuoli at Merrill Lynch, Princeton, NJ, says that, despite complicated regulations, such programs have definite business advantages.
