Managing resources for a construction project in a mixed (PC-mainframe) environment

Article Abstract:

A large construction project in which IBM was the customer involved a general contractor and a number of subcontractors. IBM wished to keep control of the project and data tracking and analysis for it was done in parallel by the contractor on a personal computer and by IBM on a mainframe. The contractor forwarded information on diskettes to the company, which made use of a customized mainframe project management system (PMS). Because of the CPU-intensive nature of some processes, such as resource optimization, the calculations performed on the mainframe were shared with the contractor. Among the features of the mainframe PMS was development of a three-dimensional resource performance graph for executive management use. The use of the mainframe computer is said to have saved several million dollars in project cost, because of the better resource allocations it enabled.
