Managing two fits of strategic human resource management

Article Abstract:

A model for developing and implementing human resource management strategies incorporating both an external fit (human resource management fits the developmental stage of the organization) and an internal fit (the components of human resource management complement and support each other) is proposed. Human resource management is seen as having five developmental stages and six strategic components. These are combined to form the Human Resource Strategic Matrix. The implications of these ideas for research and practice are discussed. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

Modeling the skills obsolescence process: a psychological-economic integration

Article Abstract:

A model of the skills obsolescence process must focus on the interaction between the position holder, the employer, and market forces. Consequently, the inability of an individual to adapt to changing job requirements is a function of psychological and economic forces, and must be modeled accordingly. In most cases, employee skill obsolescence appears to be the result of motivational and external factors, and is perhaps best corrected by changing employment rewards to fit employees' needs.

Development and application of a model of personal control in organizations

Article Abstract:

Employees exhibit a strong desire to retain or acquire personal control within the work setting. This perception of personal control or the ability to effect change within an organization can improve satisfaction, motivation and productivity, and consequently, should be encouraged and developed by managers. Managerial implications of the average employee's persistence in attempting to acquire some personal control at work are discussed.
