Manpower matters: counselling at work

Article Abstract:

Counseling in the workplace has become a more popular topic of discussion and research in recent years as redundancy counseling has arisen and more training courses have become available to teach counseling skills. Term counseling continues to be used increasingly to the point where a considerable amount of confusion and controversy has occurred as to the effectiveness of counseling and whether counseling skills are being applied correctly. The role of such counseling in the workplace is shown to be important through the detrimental impact of psychological problems of individuals on the organization, with it estimated in 1979 that 40 million working days were lost through minor illness related to depression and anxiety, compared to ten million as a result of industrial injury and disease.

The industrial bureaucrat

Article Abstract:

Public organizations have always been considered the prototypical bureaucracies. The bureaucratic mind has been associates with conformity and lack of entrepreneurial ambition. A study of over 300 employees in several different types of organizations shows otherwise. A questionnaire given to 344 employees in West Yorkshire working in six different organizations of four classes indicates that contrary to belief, industrial organizations fit the prototype of bureaucracy more closely than public services. At least some bureaucracy is reasonable in industrial organizations but too much is detrimental for the company's survival.
