Measuring business starts, success and survival: some database considerations

Article Abstract:

Consideration of the suitability of the business information database must precede efforts to measure business starts, to identify factors involved in successful businesses, and to determine business survival rates. Services available from Dun & Bradstreet Information Services, North America are examined. Business information is included on firms for which credit inquiries have been made and also for other firms, with the current proportion in the database 60% of the former and 40% of the latter. The Dun & Bradstreet database is said to be the biggest random sample available for US businesses, and provides the primary basis for the Small Business Administration Database project.
