Mexico consensus economic forecast: coning down from last year's high

Article Abstract:

Economic forecasts for Mexico in 2001 are examined, focusing on why the 2001 Mexican economy is not expected to be as robust as the 2000 economy. Topics include Mexico's dependence on the US economy and the price of oil; economic growth forecast of 3.4%, which is below the 5.5% average of the previous five years; export increase of 7.6% and import increase of 10.5%, both below the approximately 20% rate of growth for exports and imports in 2000; and forecasts for a 7.7% inflation rate.

Issues concerning Mexico's relationship with the International Monetary Fund are examined, focusing on the approval by the IMF in September 2000 of the final review of Mexico's Stand-By Arrangement. Topics include the availability to Mexico of approximately $US 1 bil, and announcement by Mexico that it does not intend to use the additional funds due to economic progress.
