Miners sweat on NT native-title breakthrough

Article Abstract:

The Australian mining industry is awaiting the outcome of negotiations between the Northern Territory Government and Aborigines on the first state native-title scheme, which could result in the clearing of more than 900 exploration-license applications accumulated since 1992. Previous licenses were granted through either long negotiations or agreements of the federal Native Title Act. The main issues of the scheme are Aboriginal concern about future amendments being made the legislation without their input and the costs of land councils clearing the backlog of applications.

Gympie Gold lives another day

Article Abstract:

Gympie Gold has survived despite low gold prices by concentrating on staying small and using low-cost methods. The Gympie mine has a hedging margin of more than $150 over a cash operating cost of about $350 an ounce. Henry Adams, managing director, says Gympie's secret is staying small and avoiding chasing 100,000 ounce production. The Gympie mine produces about 35,000 ounces a year. Gympie is exploring new positions in the main Monckland Workings. Gympie's operation is based on four refurbished shafts, using mostly second-hand equipment.

Power play favors giants

Article Abstract:

The continuing privatization of Australia's energy industry and other changes are making it difficult for smaller businesses to take advantage of increased competition to choose the best supplier. Most small companies lack the resources or skills to negotiate for the best deal. Also, with deregulation, energy companies are expanding into other services, making the choice of a supplier more difficult.
