On-line groups are offering up privacy plans

Article Abstract:

The Council of Better Business Bureaus Inc. and the Alliance for Privacy, a group of 50 companies which includes Time Warner Inc., Walt Disney Co., American Online Inc., and International Business Machines Corp., have offered two plans to limit on-line privacy violations and prevent threatened government regulation. This attempt at industry self-regulation addresses fears of privacy violations by requiring companies to inform consumers of their data gathering and sharing procedures. Internet analysts and privacy advocates question the plan's weak enforcement provisions and anticipate future government intervention.

Computer-industry group presents plan to regulate consumer privacy on-line

Article Abstract:

The Online Privacy Alliance, a group of about 50 companies that includes International Business Machines Inc., America Online and Time Warner Inc., have announced its voluntary plan for the regulation of consumers' online privacy. The plan, which is intended to fend off federal regulation of the media industry, immediately came under fire from privacy advocates who criticized the plan as inadequate and complained that voluntary measures lacked a mechanism for the protection of consumer rights, such as redress.
