Online R&D management: the way forward

Article Abstract:

British Telecommunications (BT) PLC implemented an intranet system to manage its R&D activities. The system replaced the company's paper-based R&D management process of project proposal submission known as Project Requirements Document (PRD). BT integrated a central relational database with Web browser technology to manage PRD submission, review and monitoring. The intranet system led to greater cost savings for the company than was originally expected, proving the effectiveness of Internet technologies in managing R&D projects.

The impact of research and development promotion schemes in the Taiwanese electronic component industry

Article Abstract:

The influence of government R&D promotion strategies on the R&D expenses of electronic component companies in Taiwan was studied. R&D tax credits, exemption from tariffs, and accelerated depreciation are the three main R&D incentive schemes resorted to by the government. Findings indicated that the promotional efforts caused a rise in R&D expenses of approximately 16%. Moreover, it was observed that the promotional strategies had less impact on larger companies.
