Presenteeism, power and organizational change: long hours as a career barrier and the impact on the working lives of women managers

Article Abstract:

Organizational change can have a major gender impact, with women adversely affected by their male counterparts' increased competitiveness and visible demonstration of commitment via longer working hours. Gender mix is a key element in determining how well women respond to organizational change. Restructuring can also result in heavier workloads, with the pressure to work longer hours most evident in male-dominated organizations.

Have times changed: career barriers and the token woman manager

Article Abstract:

The relevance of the early work of Rosabeth Kanter and her study of the lives of US women managers is explored from today's perspective. While women managers have made considerable progress since the work was published in 1977, various attitudinal and cultural barriers still remain. The nature of such barriers and their variability depending upon the number of women within the organization are presented and discussed.
