Private Hospitals and the Pursuit of Excellence

Article Abstract:

A consumer guide to the high technology, private hospital is provided. The explosion in the number of private care facilities is now centering on day surgery and specialized service. Private health care is now available in all parts of the country. The private hospitals are currently being under-used which results in slower rising costs in their accommodations. Facilities vary among the hospitals. However, patients should realize they are receiving the same treatment as at public hospitals; what the patient is paying for is choice and greater comfort, not better treatment. The private sector can sometimes offer high technology doctors dream about. Outside the hospital sector, there are few mainstream private health facilities.

Hedging Your Health Bets

Article Abstract:

Private health has had a steady growth in recent years. A survey shows that private health coverage is one of the most popular management perquisites. Private health subscribers are being increasingly sought by commercial insurers. The provident societies are raising their rates to cover spiralling health care costs. These societies tend to be regulators of the market, with the premium increases, price has become important, and shopping around is increasing. Many consultants are specializing in putting together deals for companies. In 1983 the Inland Revenue began to allow companies to operate self-insurance schemes. This is expected to provide the greatest competition to the provident societies.
