Project management: are employees trained to work in project teams?

Article Abstract:

The demand for project management (PM) training is increasing as more companies use project team techniques and most employees have little exposure to or outdated training in the field. Enrollees in a community college course were surveyed to their level of PM training and the extent to which their companies would use PM techniques in the future. All 34 of the students surveyed were currently included in a PM team and 23 indicated increases in the use of PM techniques where they worked.

Findings show that there are variations on how lessons learned are applied by project managers which may be caused by the level of attention given to the learning goals.

Article Abstract:

Advanced project management (PM) training is offered in a few business and engineering schools, seminars, consultants and continuing education filling the gap. An effective alternative from the perspective of the business or engineering student is an internship where they will have the opportunity to apply their education in a real world setting. A case study of a civil engineering students' 15-week internship is presented.
