Quiet commute

Article Abstract:

According to a report from the US Bureau of the Census, 9 out of 10 people prefer to drive to work, 77% drive alone and 4.7 % use public transportation. The 2.9 million of the the country's 6.2 milllion users of public transportation are found in Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington. Los Angeles and Houston have lower rates of public transportation use, having rates of 10.3% and 5.1% respectively, compared to other smaller cities like Minneapolis (12.5%); Oakland, California (16.5%); Portland, Oregon (13.3%); and Seattle (17%).

The Fed steps in to calm the markets

Article Abstract:

The Federal Reserve reduced its discount rate by 50 basis points, to 5.75% on August 17, 2007. According to the Standard and Poor's Investment Policy Committee, investors should take a careful approach towards the market in the forthcoming weeks, and warns that the Federal Reserve's reduction does not imply that the housing and subprime turmoil has already passed.
