Redrawing the portrait of a learning organization: inside Knight-Ridder, Inc

Article Abstract:

Newspaper publisher Knight-Ridder Inc. managed to successfully adapt its corporate identity to the changing business environment with the use of conventional methods and without the application of innovative learning organization methods. It did not use radical organizational changes, special methods or special learning groups. Nevertheless, the company utilized teamwork extensively and had started to create external networks to look for new business projects.

Media News Group's founder William Dean Singleton was a pioneer of the clustering method of newspaper acquistions, which consists of acquiring several local newspapers from the same area. This strategy has since been taken up by such companies as Media General, the Journal-Register Co. in Trenton, N.J., Knight Ridder, and Thomson Publishing.

No less low-tech than high

Article Abstract:

Importance of internet newspapers and radio during hurricane Katrina is discussed. When the newspapers could not be published or distributed due to storms, online newspapers became useful; when internet was not accessible due to power outages, people turned to radio.
