Relationship between JIT and TQM: practices and performance

Article Abstract:

We propose that the use of total quality management (TQM) practices will improve just-in-time (JIT) performance through process variance reduction and reduced work time and that JIT practices will improve quality performance through problem exposure and improved process feedback. Using data on 42 plants in three U.S. industries, we found that common infrastructure practices formed a strong foundation for both types of performance; in addition, we demonstrated that TQM and JIT practices interacted. Some trade-offs were identified, indicating that JIT and TQM approaches can be customized to plants. Suggestions for further research are made. (Reprinted by permission of the publisher.)

The impact of quality management practices on performance and competitive advantage

Article Abstract:

A framework that specifies the relationships between quality management practices and quality performance was developed. A path analysis of that framework resulted in the elimination of weak linkages. According to the refined model, quality market outcomes are related to the product design process and to statistical control/feedback.

The impact of just-in-time manufacturing and its infrastructure on manufacturing perfomance

Article Abstract:

A model is developed to study the effect of a just-in-time inventory program on the productivity of a manufacturer. The model shows that just-in-time systems do not impact productivity and actually build a sense of discipline throughout the manufacturer's business.
