Republic Industries names an executive from Sears, John Costello, as president

Article Abstract:

Retail auto dealerships are going through consolidation like so many other industries. John Costello left Sears, Roebuck as a senior executive to become president of Republic Industries Inc. based in Fort Lauderdale. He will have a $400 million ad budget to make Republic the biggest and the best retail automobile brand. His charge also includes Alamo and National car rental chains. Costello was responsible for the "softer side of Sears" campaign. Soft might not work at Republic.

Detroit says everything old is new again

Article Abstract:

Car designers are looking back to the past as they create the next generation of automobiles. The new 1999 Ford Mustang for example, has a hard-edged appearance that resembles the original Mustang. The model diverges from the 1993 Mustang model, which had soft curves. The jellybean-shaped models of the 1980's are no longer in place in the 1990's. For the turn-of-the century, straight-line designs will dominate car models.
