Rising Sons

Article Abstract:

Eyeing the success of the new generation of American businesses, the small firms started by innovative and independent entrepreneurs, some Japanese have tried to emulate this success in their own country. But there is a firmly entrenched corporate pecking order in the world of Japanese business, and it is almost impossible for a new business venture to ever become more than a subcontractor. Venture capital money is not often available, and those with a dream are often unable to attract qualified staff for what could be a risky venture. Both the government and big business are highly conservative and impose stringent controls on the business economy. But there are those who are willing to fight the system for their chance at success, and they hope that with the American entrepreneurs for models, the government may eventually loosen up the regulations surrounding the establishment of small businesses.

Minimills Continue Robust Growth

Article Abstract:

While the grants in the steel industry are wondering just how long they can survive, and planning mergers to help with the process, there are some in the industry who are not only surviving, they are expanding. Mini-mills which use new techniques and equipment first used in Italy, are bringing new life to the industry. Continental Steel Corp., for example, is offering a new stock issue to finance the expansion and modernization of its mills. Although the company still is not operating in the black this new equipment should allow it, even with no industry turnaround, to break out of the red.

Heading South

Article Abstract:

Silicon Valley in Northern California is the much renowned center for the high technology industry. But research has revealed that Southern California actually has more companies in many high tech fields (such as computers, communications, electronics, and instruments) than does Northern California. It was on the basis of that information that an East Coast Venture capital firm decided to locate its West Coast office in Southern California. They have been pleased with the decision, as there seems to be more opportunities and less competition in Southern California.
