As the battery goes, so goes the...; behind every family video and last-minute project on a laptop lurks a battery about to die. Why?

Article Abstract:

Battery development has lagged behind improvements in electronics. Making better batteries relies on advances in chemistry while electronics relies on discoveries in solid-state physics. A problem that has dogged the battery industry is the inability to offer customers a product with performance that can be consistently predicted. This is because so many variables affect battery performance. For this reason, it is suggested that people who rely on batteries need to make sure they have backup quantities and should plan to purchase battery types that best serve their needs. These include standard alkaline cells, rechargable nickel-cadmium batteries which are good for short bursts of energy, and nickel-metal-hydride and lithium-ion batteries for more sustained use.

Monica Lewinsky meets Jenny Craig, and a spokeswoman is born

Article Abstract:

Diet company Jenny Craig Inc. has hired Monica Lewinsky, the zaftig former intern known for her relationship at one time with President Clinton, to appear in commercials for the company as part of a $7.2 million ad campaign. The company hopes that Lewinsky's continuing struggle with and modest success in reducing her considerable weight will somehow appeal to the company's target audience, mostly women aged 25 to 54, but most of whom, presumably, have never initiated an affair with a married President, resulting in his near-impeachment and a grueling national ordeal.
