Rising tide: sites born of hate; racist pages are growing in sophistication and may lure the unwary

Article Abstract:

The Simon Wiesenthal Center has released a CD-ROM, Digital Hate 2000, providing links to World Wide Web sites devoted to racial hatred. The number of such sites on the Internet is growing, about double what it was last year. Some are also becoming more sophisticated, mirroring legitimate sites in their format, purporting to be informational resources. Sites have been found targeting children. Some include violent games targeting racial, ethnic and religious groups. Others teach how to make bombs. The Wiesenthal Center will produce 20,000 copies of the CD-ROM for distribution free to law enforcement agencies, educational institutions and media. It can be purchased by anyone for $25. Other anti-hate organizations are also tracking the phenomenon, including the Southern Poverty Law Center and Hate Watch. The control of such sites is thorny in that it raises Constitutional questions concerning freedom of speech.

Using customer loyalty may be aboon for profit-hungry net service providers

Article Abstract:

Internet service providers can use a consumer's loyalty to a specific thing, place or organization in order to keep them as customers. They can draw in customers by advertising accessibility to a rock and roll band, a church group, a film genre, or even a film star. This could be a very effective technique that Internet service providers can use to attract and keep customers.
