How Omar Green, 27, became the point man and protege for a CEO; he's a black MIT alumnus; his boss is staid, British and eager for big change; the 'funky-style dresser'

Article Abstract:

Xionics Document Technologies' CEO Robert Gilkes has become a mentor to Omar Green, an engineer at Xionics. Gilkes' choice of protege is unusual in that the two are nothing alike. Green, a 27-year-old African American, caught Gilkes' attention in the fall of 1996, when Green spoke candidly with the 58-year-old British executive about the future and lack of direction in the company. Gilkes realized that Green's entrepreneurial and technical thinking were vital to Xionics' future. Gilkes is hoping that Green's youth and energy will energize the workplace. He has placed Green in charge of testing a new chip the company is developing and overseeing eight other engineers, all of whom are at least ten years his senior.
