Risky Business

Article Abstract:

With employee insurance costs skyrocketing, many companies are looking at self-insurance as a way not only to keep medical costs down, but also to exercise some control over the types of expenses which are covered. The experience of one company which switched to a limited self-funded insurance program, and saved a considerable amount of money, is given. But self insurance programs are not suitable for all companies - those in a poor cash-flow situation, as well as those with large numbers of elderly of families, would be poor conditions for self insurance. Even those companies which are ideal for self insurance have some sort of outside involvement, either to take over some of the risk, or to help administer the program.

Vacation Breaks

Article Abstract:

A Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association (VEBA) can help your company cut its taxes. Through a VEBA, health and disability insurance can be covered. A VEBA is a vehicle that pays for employees' fringe benefits after a corporation deposits enough money to cover those costs. Vacation-home VEBAs are also an alternative. Caution should be exercised with vacation- home VEBAs because the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) scrutinizes them carefully.

Accounting for Growth

Article Abstract:

For years, direct solicitation by accounting firms was prohibited. Now, cold calls, direct-mail and advertisements are allowed. Accounting firms are competing with each other the way other businesses traditionally have been. The small business market is being courted by accounting firms. This is a market previously considered insignificant. Strategies used by accounting firms to solicit business from small firms are examined.
