Saybolt to admit fuel-testing violations

Article Abstract:

Saybolt Inc. has drafted an agreement with the Justice Department and the Environmental Protection Agency which requires the unit of Core Laboratories NV to pay a $4.9 million fine and admit to charges of conspiracy to violate the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and the Clean Air Act. Saybolt plans to admit its guilt in offering a bribe of $50,000 to Panamanian officials in order to establish a facility on the Panama Canal. The company is also expected to admit that its officials falsified records on 150 of about 3,000 tests of reformulated gasoline at one of its New Jersey facilities between 1994 and 1996.

Warner Bros. told to pay Coppola $60 million more

Article Abstract:

Warner Bros. has been ordered by a Superior Court jury in Los Angeles to pay film director Francis Ford Coppola $60 million in damages. Mr. Coppola said that Warner prevented him from making a live-action version of the movie "Pinocchio." Mr. Coppola was awarded $20 million in compensatory damages a few weeks earlier by the same jury. The damages paid to Mr. Coppola will probably be higher than the amount he would have been paid had the movie gone into production.

Court voids settlement in GM pickup-truck suit

Article Abstract:

A nationwide class-action court settlement that awarded $1,000 worth of coupons to millions of General Motors Corp. pickup truck owners was turned down by an appeals court in Louisiana. The First Circuit Court of Appeals in Louisiana ruled that a state judge made the mistake of not considering federal regulations designed to protect individuals' rights in mass-injury cases when he gave his approval to the settlement.
