Self magazine's editor to quit in October

Article Abstract:

Conde Nast Publications Inc. has disclosed that the editor in chief of its Self magazine, Rochelle Udell, will resign in October. The firm has not named an immediate successor to Ms. Udell, 55, who has been the magazine's editor since 1995. People within Conde Nast say the firm's top executives have been concerned about the magazine's recent performance. Self's paid advertising pages dropped 21.5% between January and May 1999 compared with last year. Also, the periodical's single-copy newsstand sales fell 8.8% in the six months ended December 31, despite a rise in subscriptions of 10.8%. Self's circulation is around 1.1 million. The women's lifestyle and service magazine, launched in 1979, has been struggling to find its niche in the new media world where consumers are increasingly getting their information on-line.
