Soap and diaper makers pitch to masses of Web women

Article Abstract:

Consumer marketing giants are advertising to women using the World Wide Web. Unilever recently struck the biggest on-line consumer-products advertising deal ever. It will spend at least $50 million over three years to advertise its brands on America Online and at Microsoft's collection of sites. Procter and Gamble has doubled to 10 the number of brands it advertises on the Internet. It spent $3 million in the second quarter on Internet advertising. Twenty two million women now account for 43% of the on-line population. America Online is expected to unveil a new channel designed to help advertisers tap into a predominantly female audience.

Fresh soup mystery: is Campbell's deal for Fortun cooked?

Article Abstract:

Campbell Soup Co. has been engaged in negotiations with Fortun Foods Inc. as it deals with slow sales in its canned soup business. Fortun is a marketer of chilled soup. A spokesman for Campbell declined to say if a deal had been reached between the companies. The acquisition of Fortun would mean CampbellEs re-entry into the fresh soup business.
