Some SUVs flip on side in crash test

Article Abstract:

Since sales of SUVs have taken off in the U.S., fatalities have risen exponentially. There were 1,482 deaths in 1997, the latest year with such figures available, due to SUV rollovers, doubling the figure for a ten-year time-frame. In the most recent government test of side impact crashes on SUVs, three models 'flipped over,' the Honda CR-V, an Isuzu Rodeo and a Kia Sportage. The NHTSA statement also said, though, that 'the tests weren't designed to measure a vehicle's tendency to roll over.'

U.S. seeks new air-bag requirements, but car makers say tests are flawed

Article Abstract:

Federal regulators are working towards requirements for new auto-crash testing in an attempt to improve the safety of car air-bags. However, car makers claim that the expected tests are imperfect and could bring about more injuries and deaths caused by airbags. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revamped its crash-test regulations in 1996. The agency ruled that airbags that had been used with excessive force had caused the death of young children and some adults.

Flights on nearly 75% of major routes take longer than those of decade ago

Article Abstract:

Air cargo and passenger travel is increasing at a faster rate than airlines and airports can handle. A Transportation Dept. report also shows that flights take longer than they did 10 years ago, by as much as 20 minutes longer on a couple routes. But the report also reveals that airlines' reporting practices aren't always strictly accurate and that different airlines are held to different standards.
