The EMU time bomb

Article Abstract:

The impending implementation of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) in European Union countries is expected to have an impact on companies that trade with or have branches or subsidiaries in this continent. Starting Jan 1999, the euro will become the sole reporting currency in Europe, which will compel changes in accounting procedures as well as in financial software development. Users of these programs, particularly management accountants and financial developers, will also be affected by this transition. If a US company has no subsidiary but trades with Europe, the appropriate strategy is to adjust its multicurrency software according to the new European requirements. However, if it has a European subsidiary, it is advised to revise its reporting currency during the three-and-a-half transition from the local currency to the euro in the country where the subsidiary is.
