The Icewoman Cometh in a Pinch

Article Abstract:

When a divorce forced Suzy Bass out of her comfortable role as housewife, and into the role of a self-supporting household head, she at first tried to capitalize on her liberal arts education. Unsatisfied with the lack of opportunities she found, she decided to start her own business. After considering many types of ventures, she finally decided on the ice business. With little cash, no credit rating, and no experience, it was hard to get started, but eventually she got Flash-Cubes off the ground. The emergency ice service soon became successful, spread through word of mouth by satisfied customers. Although Bass had some problems along the way - which she chooses to call learning experiences - the business grew until she had to find bigger quarters, more equipment, and to hire employees to help with the work. She feels that any woman who wants to succeed in any business venture needs one essential ingredient, commitment, for if you are truly committed to the venture you are pursuing, then everything else will fall into place.

The tax man cometh

Article Abstract:

Techniques to avoid large sales tax audit assessments are presented. The economic depression of the 1990s has prompted many states and local governments to change sales tax regulations to increase their tax base, and this has given rise to increased sales tax audit activities. To avoid costly sales tax audit assessments, small companies must follow the requirements of registration at each state where they have sufficient nexus, billing the correct state taxes, collecting exemption certicates, payment of taxes on time and record keeping for auditors.

Article Abstract:

State governments have enacted measures taxing constituents' out-of-state commerce through the use of audit campaigns. A study by Vertex Inc of Berwyn, PA, showed that the move netted an average of $26,000 against respondent companies subjected to such audit campaigns. To enhance their tax drives, states have resorted to information-sharing techniques, business income and payroll-tax returns cross-referencing and increased field monitorings.
