The design of self-managed learning: some choices and dilemmas

Article Abstract:

Self-managed learning involves practical issues such as allowing learners to exercise choice, while not restricting the choice of others. Tutors are under pressure to take on a leadership role, using their power to present themselves as experts. Tutors who acquiesce to such pressure may undermine the ability of students to carry out self-managed learning. Didactic modes of education are in appropriate for modern management styles. Self-managed learning is one way to achieve this goal.

Open space technology revisited: an eastern perspective

Article Abstract:

Using American management techniques in eastern Europe can lead to questioning about assumptions of different cultures. Experience working with Russians at a conference on Organizational Transformation in Latvia illustrates this. Managers tended not to inspire trust in Soviet times, and the notion of work based teams is foreign to Russia. Russians were deterred from meeting in groups outside work. New entrepreneurs have tended to take an individualistic approcah.

Organisational culture change in mid Devon district council

Article Abstract:

Mid Devon District Council is an English local authority which has sought to change its culture through a partnership with Bristol Business School. The experience has led to the awareness that there are paradoxes involve, and these include the need for managers to empower employees as part of their leadership role. Different perspectives have to be recognised if there is to be an agreement on goals, and conflict is part of seeking to work together with harmony.
