The evolution of human resources technology

Article Abstract:

The role of the human resources (HR) department is evolving as it tries to keep abreast of the globalization of business, mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures and other organizational changes. To keep up with the transformation of the business environment, HR executives are relying on technology and the information it generates. The current technologies revolutionizing the HR function include the client/server technology, which offers ease of data access and maintenance, and Web-enabled technologies. Other new devices increasingly used in the HR field are employee self-service systems, such as interactive voice response, video kiosks and the Internet/intranet, and relational database reporting tools and data warehousing.

Should impaired operating assets be written down?

Article Abstract:

Writing down an unprofitable plant and recognizing a loss will result in a decreased net income for the plant, the division, and the company. Since such a move has far-reaching effects, reactions to it are expected to vary. A survey of controllers, auditors, and financial analysts reveal that all three groups favor a writedown of impaired operating assets. Both controllers and auditors agree on the use of operations-based measure in determining the appropriate value to report. Financial analysts, however, prefer the sale-based measure.
