The facts of life for IT exporters to Asia: Asian markets are down but exporters believe that the upturn is on the way - and they are ready to do business

Article Abstract:

There is no doubt that the Asian economic crisis has adversely impacted Australian information technology exports, especially to Indonesia, Malaysia and South Korea. Despite these setbacks, computer peripheral, network, data storage, and other communication equipment for electronic commerce are critical to Asian businesses which will have to find the financial resources to invest in these products. One country that has remained a strong outlet is China. Stallion Technologies, a computer interface manufacturer, and JNA Telecommunications, a voice and data product supplier for carrier networks, export 80% and 40% of their business to China, respectively.

Article Abstract:

Ed Zander, president of Sun Microsystems, says that the companies that rethink how they conduct business, because of the Internet, will be the leaders. Networked customers have constant access to the Internet, and they demand superior service, marketing, and personalized web pages. Zander believes that Java and the Internet will have just as much influence as the telephone and television. Sun's own networking plan involves: 1) TVs and PCs linked to the network, 2) portal Web sites, providing comprehensive services, and 3) back-end information processors.
