The new corporate watchdog ponders how to do more with less

The new Australian Securities and Investments Commission was established on Jul 1, 1998. The agency must determine its technological requirements with the demand of the Federal Government to decrease its budget by over $2 million. The agency provides consumer protection in insurance, banking and pension matters as well as the enforcement and regulation of corporate law.

Unsecured 'back doors' leave companies open to hacker attack

Article Abstract:

Computer crimes can be reduced by proper attention to modem security. A recent study on computer crimes conducted by the security consultant Shake Communications revealed that Australian corporations' information systems were vulnerable to unauthorized access via their modems. To improve security, modem dial-ins should require authorization at a minimum.

Telephone bills still don't ring true

Article Abstract:

The effects of the deregulation of the Australian telecommunications industry on call charges are discussed, with focus on the lack of change in mobile and local calls. However long-distance calls have become cheaper.
