The strategic planning process in growing companies

Article Abstract:

A 1996 study determined differences in the strategic planning processes of high and super growth companies in the UK and how these differences affected their performance. The study also sought to make comparisons with the results of studies conducted in the 1980s. Findings revealed that majority of both types of growth companies conducted strategic planning at least once annually, which conform to the studies by Baker et al and Simon. Moreover, chief executives were found to actively participate in the strategic planning process, which contrasts with the low involvement of senior executives and strategic planning units. Like other studies, findings of this research indicate that most companies in both groups take a one- to three-year timeframe when conducting strategic plans, and that clarification of goals is one of the most common reasons for conducting strategic planning. Other findings and comparisons with other studies are discussed.
