The transfer and transferability of Japanese manufacturing practices to the West

Article Abstract:

A group of international academics studied the implementation and effectiveness of Japanese production management techniques in Western businesses. The techniques include Total Quality Management, team building and lean production. Research revealed a strong correlation between implementation of techniques and improved performance, but showed that only 2% of Western companies match up to Japanese excellence in terms of the extent of implementation and performance level. The researchers noted culturally-based differences in implementation, and suggested strategies for individual companies.

Metaphors and organisations: practical applications in organisational diagnosis

Article Abstract:

The popularization of metaphors as a means to understanding organizations began in the late 1980s, but has only recently been explored as a method for organizational diagnosis. A practical application of the use of metaphors as an organizational tool is presented, showing that the approach provides useful insights into how managers perceive their organizations.
