'Tis the season for 'slamming.' (long-distance telephone service scam)

Article Abstract:

Small businesses must be wary of 'slamming' by small long-distance carriers starting in the fall of 1996. This practice involves switching services with a customer's inadvertent approval or without their approval at all. The FCC is adopting rules to make this practice more difficult.

Heightened scrutiny for S corporations

The IRS is increasing its number of audits on small or S corporations to apprehend those who lie about their FICA self-employment taxes. Some executives do not count themselves as employees to avoid these taxes. Tips on calculating profit distribution and salary are given.
