Towards integrating emotions into strategic management research: trait affect and perceptions of the strategic environment

Article Abstract:

Research indicates that there is a relationship between negative affect in managers and their perceptions of the strategic environment. Two sets of people who were undertaking a Master of Business Administration course completed a questionnaire survey. The survey revealed that negative affectivity, which is a natural disposition towards affects including depression and anxiety, correlated with perceived industrial complexity and poor organizational performance. A number of factors could explain this correlation which merits further examination.

Evidence of managerial short-termism in the UK

Article Abstract:

There is strong evidence for short-termism in UK companies, reflected in the fact that managers place more emphasis on short-term gains than on long-term returns which may be more beneficial. It appears that managers' decisions are frequently determined by their personal views about the behaviour of the capital market and about the potential of that behaviour to affect business opportunities for individuals and companies. Short-termism will only be overcome through changing managers' views about the importance of figures of earnings.

The influence of functional experience on perceptions of strategic priorities

Article Abstract:

Recent research based on three existing studies of functional bias has found indications of functional bias in managers' perceptions of corporate priorities derived from generic competitive strategies. Functional orientation accounted for some of the variance in perceptions. It was also found that managers tend to view problems or issues which cannot be directly linked with their functional backgrounds when asked to deal with an unfamiliar case situation.
