Trainees' attributes and attitudes: neglected influences on training effectiveness

Article Abstract:

Most previous research addressing trainee characteristics and their effect on the outcome of training programs has focused on the ability and intelligence levels of the trainees; however, research into the trainees' attitudes and motivations indicates that these characteristics affect the success of training programs as well. A model of trainee morale and motivation is developed and the components of these characteristics are defined and discussed. Motivational components include: wanting to learn, desiring a change in job status, and wanting to improve the work effort by using new skills. The motivational research indicates that training managers must ensure trainees understand the aims and objectives of training programs (to limit disappointment), and that all training programs should promise trainees a beneficial result (to promote employee motivation and ensure success).
