U.N., U.S. tightens rules on land mines

Article Abstract:

A treaty calling for further restrictions on the use of land mines was signed by the US and 55 member states of the United Nations. The treaty still falls short of goal that was sought by humanitarian groups who had campaigned vigorously for a complete and total ban of the weapons.

U.S. scraps asylum policy

Article Abstract:

The Clinton Administration ended a policy in which Cuban refugees are given preferential treatment over other refugees. The 21,000 refugees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba will be admitted to the US, however. Cuban-Americans are angry at this new policy.

Germany tightens laws on asylum

Article Abstract:

The German parliament elected to restrict foreigners' right to seek asylum in Germany in May 1993. Some 70% of Germans supported this action. Germany had enacted a liberal asylum policy after World War II.
