U.S., 3 states ask federal court to block Waste Management's planned acquisition

Article Abstract:

The US Justice Dept., Florida, Pennsylvania and New York have joined together to protest the acquisition of Houston, TX-based Eastern Environmental Services Inc. by Mount Laurel, NJ-based Waste Management Inc. on antitrust grounds. If the merger goes through, the Justice Dept. contends that competition for New York, NY's waste disposal contract, valued in the billions of dollars, would be reduced. The merger would increase Waste Management's share of NYC waste disposal services to close to 50%. Justice Dept. officials feel a settlement can be reached with regulators that will not necessarily derail the entire acquisition.
