WTO rules on Canada's pharmaceutical patent regime

Article Abstract:

Issues concerning the World Trade Organization's Dispute Settlement Panel decision on the EU's claim that Canada's patent regime violates the Agreement on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, focusing on pharmaceutical sector. Topics include the WTO finding that it is legitimate for Canada to seek regulatory approval for generic drugs before patents on patented products expire, but that it is not legitimate for Canada to stockpile such generic drugs during the regulatory approval process.

Issues concerning Canadian thin capitalization rules as they apply to cross-border interest payments, as nonresidents capitalize Canadian subsidiaries with debt, are examined. Topics include tax advantages of increasing debt, Canadian thin capitalization rules as they apply to interest deductions, and proposals for reform of the thin capitalization rules.

Bank of Canada acknowledges negative impact of terrorist attacks on second-half growth; inflation projected to fall

Article Abstract:

Canada's monetary policy is discussed in light of economic reports from the Bank of Canada which show negative impact from the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the US. Inflation, which was at 2.3% for four months, could become a problem.
