Water utility industry

Article Abstract:

Analysts favor the long-term performance possibilities of large, publicly traded water utility organizations with access to capital markets. Large water utilities are expected to decrease operating risks by geographically diversifying, and by finding growth opportunities. The reauthorization of the Safe Drinking Water Act should help keep capital outlays down. Although water utility stocks continue to lag the market because of their slow earnings growth, conservative investors should find them financially sound options.

Article Abstract:

The 1996 Amendments to the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974 has made the testing requirements for water utilities less onerous, and capital costs are expected to be stable for utilities that have improved their systems. The industry is also expected to increase privatization and consolidation in the future, and industry tax changes are are forecast, as well. However, these stocks are not timely investments in 1997 and 1998.
