A bomb that slowed things up

Article Abstract:

The accidental bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has been followed by a Chinese demand for the bombing to end. Unless this occurs, China will not support a settlement to end the conflict in Yugoslavia. Russia has also called for the bombing to end, but the Russian position is complicated by political uncertainty due to the need to select a new prime minister. There is increased criticism in countries that are members of NATO of the air attacks, but it is still muted.

Defining NATO's aims

Article Abstract:

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should clarify its aims in the Balkan confict. NATO is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and this is a good time to assess its goals, and the meaning of the conlfict within the wider set of goals. NATO's founding principles include a commitment to democracy. There is a need to seek an outcome to the conflict in Yugoslavia which is related to NATO's founding principles. An international protectorate is needed to allow the former inhabitants of Kosovo, Yugoslavia, to live there again.

Land ahoy?

Article Abstract:

The United Kingdom is arguing for ground forces to be used to set up an international protectorate in Kosovo, Yugoslavia. Yugoslavia has increased the number of it forces in Kosovo. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is bombing a widening variety of economic targets. Serbia does not appear to be especially concerned that NATO is less opposed to the idea of a land operation, and Russian support for Serbia could become more open if a land operation were carried out.
