A deceptively quiet election

Article Abstract:

Taiwan is holding presidential elections in Mar 2000, and there are three main candidates, including Lien Chna, favored by Taiwan's president, Lee Teng-hui. The candidates are using a conciliatory tone in their references to China. China is keen for Taiwan to rejoin the mainland, and was pleased when President Bill Clinton declined to back Taiwan's independence. China's actions toward Taiwan have led to attempts by Congress to protect Taiwan, which could be counterproductive, though China is to blame for them.

China's hop, skip and jump on to Taiwan

Article Abstract:

China is seeking reunification with Taiwan and has threatened to use force if Taiwan will not negotiate on the issue. Taiwan, meanwhile, is holding presidential elections, and ams to undermine support for the democratioc Progressive party candidate, Chen Shui-bian. A previous attempt to intimidate Taiwanese voters had the opposite effect and led them to favor the candidate which China opposed. A bill to strengthen US military links with Taiwan is less likely to be defeated as a result of China's threats.

Impatient China

Article Abstract:

China is putting pressure on Taiwan to start talks on reunification, and has threatened military force if the talks are delayed. China is able to blockade Taiwan. The US argues that differences between Taiwan and China should be settled peacefully, and should tell China that it will defend Taiwan if it is attacked. China's efforts to influence Taiwan could be counterproductive if election candidates in Taiwan fear to appear to be too influenced by China.
