The election of Noboru Takeshita as Japan's prime minister in 1987 has been clouded by suspicion that he was backed by some of the country's organized crime groups. An investigation has revealed the influence of criminal and right wing groups in Japanese politics.

Japan has new laws to combat organized crime. The laws cover areas such as firearms, swords and drugs. They will not entirely stop the gangs which are now organizing themselves as businesses with boards and chairmen.
