A gathering storm

Article Abstract:

The AIDS epidemic is gathering force in Thailand but its full force will probably fall elsewhere in Asia, where planning and resources are less adequate. In addition to the human pain and losses involved, Thailand is enduring a loss of manpower, with 120,000 losses already to the disease, and nearly 700,000 more expected by 2005. GDP growth may also suffer. Northern areas are the hardest hit, largely because the practice of visiting prostitutes was stronger there, and many villages face impoverishment.

Article Abstract:

Unique Wear, a small Thai garment company, is one of many in the garment industry which has been forced to adopt new strategies as the country's economic conditions have changed. It has focused on sales of high-quality goods in Japan, and as a result has seen overseas sales rise by more than 10% so far in 1996. Thailand saw textile exports fall by more than 12% in the first half of 1996, and manufacturers are generally responding by concentrating on the top end of the market.

Learning curve

Article Abstract:

Thailand has invested 15 million dollars to set up the National Automotive Institute. This results from the demand of General Motors that the Thai people's skills be improved at such a centre if GM were to construct an assembly plant, at a cost of 750 million dollars, in the country. The Institute, which is expected to carry out research into pollution and marketing, will probably be based at a state university in the province of Chonburi in eastern Thailand.
