A lesson in legal reality

Article Abstract:

Martin Lee and Szeto Wah, two vocal liberal legislators, are unable to find a law firm to represent their defamation suit against Simon Li, a lawyer with ties to the Chinese government. Their difficulty raises questions about the legal community's willingness to face sticky issues. Only eight of Hongkong's nearly 450 law firms have turned down the case, but all eight had been selected as likely to take it. In response, the Law Society may create firmer guidelines for turning down cases.

Arm in arm

Article Abstract:

America is worried that the broadening of Sino-Russian military relations will significantly affect the balance of power in the region. The US is especially concerned that Russia is aiding Chinese nuclear, missile and space strategies and is strengthening arms trade through intelligence exchanges. These exchanges may go against international non-proliferation treaties. China, in addition, may give the technology to other countries.

Company town: Cathay strike highlights colony's labour problems

Article Abstract:

The 17-day strike of the flight attendants of Cathay Pacific Airways Ltd, which ended in Jan 1993, has bolstered the cause of labor union organizers who have been complaining about Hong Kong's labor laws. Hong Kong union organizers believe that the laws are unfairly biased against labor and revisions to the law may not occur since business executives strongly influence the colony's decision making bodies.
