Cardinal comes calling: papal emissary's visit highlights the church's problems

Article Abstract:

Relations between China and the Vatican, hostile since 1950 when the Communist government expelled the Roman Catholic church and began persecuting Catholics loyal to the pope, improved slightly when a papal legate, Cardinal Roger Etchegaray, visited China. Sports Minister Wu Shaozu invited Etchegaray to witness the opening of China's national games, probably to publicize China's effort to win Peking's designation as the site of the 2000 Olympics. The low-key visit probably does not indicate that the Vatican will quickly brealk off relations with Taiwan in favor of the Peking government.

Exit emperor, stage left: 'theatre of the absurd' may describe today's reality

Article Abstract:

The Chinese production of Friedrich Durrenmatt's 'Romulus the Great' parallels some of the present realities existing in China. Directed by Li Zhaohua, the presentation of the historical comedy written in 1949 at the Capital Theatre ushers in a more daring phase within the Chinese artistic community. While most of the artistic endeavors would have been repressed by the Communist government in the past, a degree of leniency has been adopted by Politburo Standing Committee propaganda chief Li Riuhuan.

Corporate hybrid

Article Abstract:

China is restructuring state-controlled enterprises by merging profitable companies with those that have no chances of turning a profit. Although the principle of controlling unemployment through such moves is laudable, it remains questionable since the unprofitable or bankrupt companies will drain the moneymaking corporations. The sound planning and management by general manager Liang Biao of Baiju Electrical Appliance Co is tested by Baiju's merger with the virtually bankrupt Bailan Electrical.
