A new Sino-U.S. relationship?

Article Abstract:

The Chinese and US governments have commented on the success of the meeting between Chinese President Jiang Zemin and US President Bill Clinton, but there are potential problems in the accord. The two sides reached agreement on establishing high-level communications between the countries, and agreed to the building of a strategic partnership. However, China entered the bilateral relationship on the condition that the two countries put aside differences whilst seeking common ground, yet the US will continue to denounce China for various issues connected with human rights.

Forging new U.S.-China ties

Article Abstract:

The US should give China permanent Most Favored Nation trading status rather than treat it as a perennial political football. A balanced relationship would be better for all concerned than one based chiefly on confrontation, especially over human rights, and would permit more cooperation over peace on the Korean peninsula, controlling nuclear proliferation, and the like. Both capitals clearly would like a better relationship, and the recently concluded agreement on protecting intellectual property rights may lay a foundation.

Welcome China into the world: Washington should build up a relationship of trust with Beijing

Article Abstract:

The US should formulate and articulate a clearer policy on China and work more through multinational bodies to influence Beijing. A willingness to discuss China's apparent nuclear non-proliferation violations rather than resorting to unilateral economic sanctions is a positive first step. China deserves to be a member of the multinational bodies that shape issues affecting it, such as the Missile Technology Control Regime. If it is treated with respect and friendship, it will likely respond in kind.
